Who Is the Antichrist? The Antichrist, the False Prophet, and the Mark of the Beast
The Antichrist is a coming world ruler who opposes Christ, deceives the nations, and demands to be worshiped as God. The Bible gives him several names and describes his rise, his alliance with a False Prophet, his mark, and his sudden end when Jesus returns.
This page gathers what Scripture says, separates the text from speculation, and shows how different Christian traditions read these passages. See where this fits on the interactive end times timeline.
The Antichrist’s names in the Bible
| Name | Passage |
|---|---|
| The little horn | Daniel 7:8, 24-25 |
| The prince who is to come | Daniel 9:26-27 |
| The king who exalts himself | Daniel 11:36-37 |
| The man of lawlessness, the son of destruction | 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 |
| The antichrist | 1 John 2:18, 22; 4:3; 2 John 7 |
| The beast from the sea | Revelation 13:1-10 |
What the Bible says the Antichrist will do
- Make a covenant with many for seven years (Daniel 9:27), which many readers see as the start of the tribulation.
- Stand in the temple and declare himself god at the midpoint, the abomination of desolation (Daniel 9:27; Matthew 24:15; 2 Thessalonians 2:4).
- Rule the nations and make war on the saints for 42 months (Revelation 13:5-7).
- Survive an apparently fatal wound, which amazes the world (Revelation 13:3).
- Gather the nations against God at Armageddon and be defeated by Christ’s word (Revelation 16:13-16; 19:19-20).
- Be thrown alive into the lake of fire with the False Prophet (Revelation 19:20).
The False Prophet and the mark of the beast
Revelation 13:11-18 describes a second beast, rising from the earth, who looks like a lamb but speaks like a dragon. He performs great signs, sets up an image of the first beast, and requires everyone to receive a mark on the right hand or forehead in order to buy or sell. The mark is the name of the beast or the number of his name, 666.
The mark is not something a person receives without knowing it. Revelation 14:9-11 warns that whoever worships the beast and receives his mark will share his judgment, which shows that the mark is a conscious act of allegiance.
How Christians interpret the Antichrist
| Approach | Who the Antichrist is |
|---|---|
| Futurist | A single person who will arise before Christ returns |
| Preterist | A first-century figure, most often Nero |
| Historicist | Historic Protestant writers pointed to the papacy |
| Idealist | A recurring spirit of opposition to Christ in every age (1 John 2:18) |
John’s letters add an important balance: “even now many antichrists have appeared” (1 John 2:18). Whatever you believe about a final Antichrist, the spirit of antichrist, denying that Jesus is the Christ come in the flesh, is already at work (1 John 4:3).
Should you worry about the Antichrist?
Satan’s end is already written (Revelation 20:10), and the Antichrist’s reign is short and limited by God. Jesus told His followers to watch and to stay faithful, not to fear. The safest place to stand is with Christ today.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Antichrist alive today?
No one can know. Christians in every generation have named candidates, and every guess so far has been wrong. Scripture says the man of lawlessness will be revealed in his time (2 Thessalonians 2:3-8), so believers are called to watch, not to speculate.
What does 666 mean?
Revelation 13:18 calls 666 “the number of a man” and asks for wisdom to calculate it. Many interpreters connect it to gematria, the ancient practice of assigning numbers to letters (Nero Caesar in Hebrew letters totals 666). Others see six, one short of seven, as a symbol of human imperfection posing as God.
Is a digital ID or a microchip the mark of the beast?
Not by itself. In Revelation, the mark is tied to worshiping the beast and is a deliberate choice of loyalty (Revelation 13:15-17; 14:9-11). Technology may make such control possible, but no one takes the mark by accident.
Is the Antichrist the same as the beast?
Most futurist readers identify the Antichrist with the beast from the sea in Revelation 13:1-10, the little horn of Daniel 7, and the man of lawlessness of 2 Thessalonians 2. The word antichrist itself appears only in John’s letters.
Who is the False Prophet?
The False Prophet is the beast from the earth in Revelation 13:11-18, who performs signs and leads the world to worship the first beast. He and the Antichrist are thrown alive into the lake of fire at Christ’s return (Revelation 19:20).
The book behind this guide
This guide draws on Paul T. Barham’s upcoming book, The Bible’s Prophetic Timeline: A Beginner’s Guide to the End Times, the Rapture, the Antichrist, the Tribulation, and the Book of Revelation. The book walks through every event and every major person in Bible prophecy, sets out what each Christian tradition believes, and gives the pre-tribulation view a full chapter.
Join the email list on the home page to hear when the book releases. Until then, Paul’s book For the Love of God includes a Scripture-based appendix on the signs of the end times, and Salvation 101 explains how to be ready to meet Jesus.
