Scripture describes God in hundreds of ways, but only a handful of times does it stop and say, in the plainest possible words, what God is: God is One. God is Spirit. God is Love. God is Light.
In God Is One, Spirit, Love & Light, Bible teacher and lay evangelist Paul T. Barham takes those four statements one at a time and lets the verses speak. More than 400 passages are quoted in full from the NASB 2020, so you can read each verse before reading about it.
Section I shows why the whole Bible confesses one God, revealed as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, whose oneness is a relationship of love. Section II explores what it means that God is spirit, how the Son took on flesh, and how the Spirit lives in every believer. Section III defines love by the cross and traces everything God’s love has done and the people it reaches. Section IV follows God’s light from the burning bush to Patmos and shows how His children reflect it.
A closing chapter, Eternal Destinies, looks with care rather than fear at what the four truths mean forever, for those who live with God and for those who live without Him.
Each chapter ends with a short recap, and the book includes the Nicene Creed, the Definition of Chalcedon, a glossary, and a complete Bible verse index. A companion Small Group Study Guide (sold separately) makes it ready for classes and small groups.
Warm, fair to Christians across traditions, and grounded in Scripture, this book is for anyone who wants to know not only about God, but God Himself.
About the Author

Paul T. Barham writes about love because he has needed it to survive. His own story includes marriage separation, addiction and recovery, and years spent rebuilding what estrangement had broken — the kind of wreckage that teaches you which parts of love actually hold. He is a bi-vocational lay evangelist who preaches about once a month at a small chapel in North Carolina, and a software engineering executive with a B.S. and M.S. in Computer Science. Raised Southern Baptist, he now describes himself simply as a non-denominational, Bible-centered Christian. Paul believes the mark of a Christian isn’t correct doctrine alone — it’s love that survives contact with a broken life.

Section I — God Is One
Chapter 1 — There Is No Other
In a world crowded with gods, Israel confessed in the Shema that the Lord is one. Moses, the psalmists, Isaiah, Jesus, and the apostles all kept that confession, and because God is one, He deserves an undivided heart.
Chapter 2 — Three in One
How Scripture reveals the one God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, distinct Persons seen together at Jesus’ baptism, why every analogy from nature falls short, and how the early church guarded the teaching.
Chapter 3 — That They May Be One
Love has always existed within God. The Father and the Son share one will and one work, every believer is held in both their hands, and Jesus prayed that His people would be one as He and the Father are one.
Section II — God Is Spirit
Chapter 4 — Spirit, Not Flesh
What it means that God has no body and is present everywhere, why you are never out of His reach, why the Holy Spirit is a Person rather than a force, and what the words “Father” and “He” do and do not mean.
Chapter 5 — The Word Became Flesh
The eternal Son, His appearances in the Old Testament, and how He took on flesh in Mary’s womb without ceasing to be God. He became man in order to die, rose again, and remains a man forever, glorified.
Chapter 6 — In Spirit and Truth
Because God is spirit, worship depends on how you come, not where you are. The Spirit who lives in every believer grows fruit and gives gifts, and true worship goes to the Father, through the Son, in the Spirit.
Section III — God Is Love
Chapter 7 — What Love Is
Love is God’s nature, not only His activity. Through agape and the Old Testament’s hesed, this chapter shows a love defined by the cross: patient, loyal, disciplining, and holy enough that it will not leave us as we are.
Chapter 8 — What Love Has Done
From creation in God’s image to the cross, where love and justice meet, to adoption as sons and daughters and Jesus’ intercession now: everything God’s love has done, and the promise that nothing can separate His children from it.
Chapter 9 — Love for All
God is good to all people, shows no partiality, and runs to meet the lost. His patience is why Jesus has not yet returned, and we love because He first loved us.
Section IV — God Is Light
Chapter 10 — His Light Seen
What people saw when they met God’s glory, from the pillar of fire to the Transfiguration to John’s vision on Patmos, why every spiritual experience must be tested, and how the story ends in light.
Chapter 11 — No Darkness at All
In God there is no darkness at all. Light in Scripture stands for holiness, truth, and knowledge, God’s saving truth is open to everyone, and each person comes toward the Light or turns away from it.
Chapter 12 — Children of Light
Believers reflect Christ’s light the way the moon reflects the sun. Walking in the light means honesty with God about our sin, not perfection, as the Spirit transforms us little by little into His image.
Eternal Destinies
Eternal Destinies: Forever With God, or Forever Without Him
The book began as a sermon on the outer darkness. This chapter looks, with care rather than fear, at what the four truths mean forever: life in the full presence of the God who is One, Spirit, Love, and Light, or existence without Him, which God does not want for anyone.
Conclusion and Appendices
The conclusion gathers the most important truth from every chapter in one place and explains how to respond to God’s invitation. Six appendices follow: the Nicene Creed, the Definition of Chalcedon, a glossary, sources, a list for further reading, and a complete Bible verse index.
